Well then you can settle for telnet which you will not have to
install.
But which is lousy on the security aspect. One other thing could be a web
based interface like maybe a cgi script. I remember from these people here
who went for afnog 2000 that they got a book for cisco router
configuration and it had a section on how to make web based interfaces for
unix commands. I think the book is called cisco router configuration and
troubleshooting not the cisco ccna book but another smaller one. Sorry I
don't have better info. I did not manage to attend afnog.
