Latest is version 4.4-STABLE. It is preferable to use cvsup. Simply edit
/usr/share/examples/cvsup/stable-supfile and then run cvsup to upgrade
your system to the latest. A sstable link is all you need. my link is very
slow but because it is stable I am still able to upgrade my machines by
simply leaving the cvsup running overnight.

You can download the latest packages and install them manually, it is
just that using the ports is usually much easier as all you do is make;
make install; make clean Thus it is easy to upgrade just the necessary
port with portcheckout and then use the new port skeleton to download and
install.
