Just for the record: LOGIN is not Microsoft specific. It was invented by
Mark Crispin for use with Pine. It is unfortunate that it was around the
same time as the standardized PLAIN mechanism. (There are some who argue
that LOGIN has the advantage that the user id and password don't travel
in the same packet, but personally, I don't think that is of great
importance.)
