I've not seen that error message before. Looks like a problem with your
version of 'make'.

You haven't installed 'gmake' and symlinked it to 'make' have you? Exim
assumes that your native FreeBSD make is running. Try typing '/usr/bin/make'
instead of 'make'

Other than that, I suggest you search the mailing list archives at
www.exim.org, and if you don't find anything, post to exim-users.
