RE: Africa spends US$400 million on internal traffic

This must be classic VoIP.

For instance, in many African countries, and several other countries around
the world, VoIP is helping telcos save millions, while making millions. The
unsuspecting legacy SOHO/home user dials Kenya from the UK, or dials the USA
from Mozambique, and is charged those traditional and prohibitive call
rates. Meanwhile, the local telco is using IP to to save satellite
circuit-switched costs, but doesn't pass that cost on to their clientele.

Has been happenning for a long time, may even go on for longer.

But from the UK I can call Kenya just by dialling a premium-rate UK number
- no registration or contract - for 25p (~40c) per minute. e.g.

So where does the extra money go?
