RE: Africa spends US$400 million on internal traffic

Some of this is already going on, and shamefully, even in major African
PTTs. A lot of the slow development is to blamed on local legislation and
licensing for provision of these services.

The idea of CLECs [Competitive Local Exchange Carriers] is quite scary to
some of the local policy makers. ILECs still hold the gateway to the
universe, but their monopoly allows them to keep prices up, while keeping
costs WAY down, and not passing that on as savings to already irritated
clients.

You will be surprised but this technology has been tried and tested, in
Africa, even as far back as '98. Because of regulations, CLEC investors now
have redundant equipment, lying around building dust. Not quite the plan
they envisaged, is it?

Their days are numbered. Very soon, IP will carry most (if not all) of the
voice traffic around the world. Need some more engineers to work QoS into
Routers, and routers to talk end to end to guarantee priority for real-time
traffic. We are the PTTs of the future ;-)

Sunday.
