 Cacti is a good trending tool. We use Zenoss (with reasonable success) 
 for our "active" monitoring. I second Mark's suggestion for Observium as 
 well, it's a fairly solid tool. OpenNMS can work if you already have a 
 lot of people familiar with Java and XML, but it's certainly not my 
 preference. Strongly recommend against Zabbix, I found lots of issues 
 with it as a platform for monitoring.
