Not directly related to your post (and this will sound weird) but if a
particular OS has features or tools you MUST use and can't find
substitutes for, then by all means use that OS. Even if it's Windows.

Not quite. The image you downloaded at first was likely the right one
(though given when you posted the message I'm surprised you downloaded
10.10 rather than 11.10 or 10.04). The image you get these days if you
select the default downloads is a "live" one meaning you can run it from
RAM but it can also be installed to your disk. If you go to
<http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download> look at the
instructions under step 4 right at the bottom of the page.

Ok, so what make/model of USB stick is it? How is it formatted? What did
you try? I'm not sure what version of Ubuntu you ended up installing,
but does "mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt" work as root? and does "ls /mnt" show
you the files you expect? (don't forget to umount /mnt).

If the command line options work then likely your desktop environment
just isn't automatically mounting it for you which is something else.

Your frustration is understood, but understand that without details for
the *current* problem being solved (see above) it may not be easy for
anyone to guess what may (not) have happened.

Also, like Seun asked, what hardware are you installing to? A laptop?
Desktop? Virtual Machine? If you're using virtualization, what vendor
(and version of it) powers your virtual machines?
