I will buy your idea
My 8.04 was doing fine actually, but after trying 10.10 I enjoyed its look and feel but if I cannot make with my USB memory stick then for sure I should go back to my 8.04. However after trying the same 10.10 on Virtual environment it works fine with everything. I cannot work on virtual also so I should gp back to 8.04

I have 10.04 ISO as well and if you say it is fine then I will first try it before resuming to 8.04 if ever.

Dear Yasini,

It is better to return to Ubuntu 8.04 or better still upgrade to 10.04. if a version gives headaches, conquer it by moving to a reliable version. If  may ask what is the essence of upgrading?  have been enjoying my 10.04 for years now to configure any monitoring tools & mount any device.

Thanks!

The issue is only and just USB memory Stick. You can't believe Is the OS running on a virtualized environment OR standalone?
Fdisk -l will show the /dev/sdb1 with the capacity of my memory stick, Now I am about to run crazy again, I cannot afford to run my new OS without USB stick functionality. I have googled and tried a lot of everything said there in the forums but all in VAIN. I have now reached at the point that Either I go BACK to my 8.04 though I thought I could enjoy much on Ubuntu with 10.10 OR I get the Last help and my LAST RESORT is you Guys.
Persnally if you cannot wait for 12.04 LTS which is around the corner, i suggest you make use of 10.04LTS as it has long time security support, even more that 10.10 It reminds me of OUR Late Lecture for Computer Science in 2000 at the University of Dar es Salaam the LATE Dr. Mbise who was always preaching US that "IF YOU FIND YOU ARE USING A LOT OF ENERGY OR A LOT OF THINKING IN ANYTHING TECHNICAL THEN YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT EITHER YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG OR SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH THE SYSTEM" i.e. Life is supposed to be easier and not difficult in the computing world.

Now please help me out of this predicament as I consider to go back to UBUNTU 8.04 just for the USB Memory functionality.

Excuse me for the long STORY this is to make sure That my problem is well Understood.

Hello Patrick,

1. The USB stick is 2.0 and it doesn't matter what you insert provided it is a USB stick I tried several but surprisingly a USB mass storage works fine, USB Camera works fine, USB Card reader works fine

2. The format on the USB is FAT16 as usual

3. Version of Ubuntu, actually I don't know what you mean but I used Ubuntu 10.10 if this is correct for the question

4. I installed on an hp dc5000 desktop with 512MB RAM 2.8GHZ processor and stand alone

5. I will try this command "mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt" I expected it should mount automatically. The strange thing is the USB drive will show up in /dev but doesn't mount and so you cannot see its contents.

Now because the machine is at home when I go back in the evening I will try this command and will feedback tomorrow.

Thanks for your help,

Yasini

Not directly related to your post (and this will sound weird) but if a particular OS has features or tools you MUST use and can't find substitutes for, then by all means use that OS. Even if it's Windows.

Not quite. The image you downloaded at first was likely the right one (though given when you posted the message I'm surprised you downloaded
10.10 rather than 11.10 or 10.04). The image you get these days if you select the default downloads is a "live" one meaning you can run it from RAM but it can also be installed to your disk. If you go to <http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download> look at the instructions under step 4 right at the bottom of the page.

Ok, so what make/model of USB stick is it? How is it formatted? What did you try? I'm not sure what version of Ubuntu you ended up installing, but does "mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt" work as root? and does "ls /mnt" show you the files you expect? (don't forget to umount /mnt).

If the command line options work then likely your desktop environment just isn't automatically mounting it for you which is something else.

> Excuse me for the long STORY this is to make sure That my problem is

Your frustration is understood, but understand that without details for the *current* problem being solved (see above) it may not be easy for anyone to guess what may (not) have happened.

Also, like Seun asked, what hardware are you installing to? A laptop?
Desktop? Virtual Machine? If you're using virtualization, what vendor (and version of it) powers your virtual machines?
