[afnog] ZA <-> MZ Routing Problem

Hi All

Is anyone from Telecomunicações de Moçambique (TDM) on this list? I'd be
happy for on-list or off-list responses.

I have been tracking a routing problem between TDM and South Africa for
about the last 6 months and it seems that it has not been resolved.

I am seeing high latency between TDM and South Africa and this is
negatively impacting Internet performance for a number of customers and
downstream ISPs in Mozambique, Malawi and potentially elsewhere too.

 4 196.43.52.42 (196.43.52.42) 1.435 ms 1.698 ms 1.605 ms
 5 196.43.26.106 (196.43.26.106) 1.518 ms 1.414 ms 1.401 ms
 6 tdm-mozambique-gw2.telkom-ipnet.co.za (196.25.179.210) 175.688 ms
176.444 ms 176.313 ms
 7 gi-0-2.cta-isp-car-3.tdm.mz (41.220.160.202) 176.233 ms 176.154 ms
 176.075 ms
 8 stats.zambeze.tdm.mz (196.28.224.21) 175.997 ms 176.333 ms 176.178 ms

The round-trip latency between Johannesburg and Maputo should be under
30ms yet it is over 170ms. There does appear to be a direct cross border
link so this should not be the case.

What appears to be happening is that while routes from TDM are
propagating to peers in ZA, the 2000+ ZA route are not propagating into
MZ. Packets towards MZ are flowing directly cross border while the
return path is asynchronous via Europe.

Can anyone assist with resolving this?
