Hi there,
Are there still folks running routers and maintaining networks on this
list? I’d like to think so—otherwise, this message wouldn’t have reached
you!
Let’s talk about something important: **IPv6**.
I know it might not top your priority list right now, but I wanted to
share a few insights.
According to APNIC [1], 4.23% of their samples are now ‘IPv6 preferred.’
That means those networks will attempt to use IPv6 first to reach remote
destinations.
This is the highest percentage ever recorded. While it’s still
relatively low, if you look at who’s driving this growth, you’ll notice:
- New networks enabling dual-stack by default
- Existing (often mobile) operators gradually transitioning from IPv4 to
IPv6 using various techniques
- Satellite or cable operators entering new markets who turn on IPv6
from day one
I’ll leave it to you to identify these groups in our region as a small
exercise. 😊
So, do you fit into any of these categories? If not, what’s stopping you
from getting started—especially while there’s still time to plan at your
own pace?

sharing their experience—or, reach out to me directly for a chat.
Let’s keep the conversation going and help move Africa’s networks
forward together.
