RE: technical help

Title: Message
Paul, then I guess you have an even bigger problem than we imagine.

Please let us know what kernel version you are running, as well as the name of your network interface card.

Also, run the command "lsmod", and send us your output.

hello mark

help ping 64.110.88.3 and 64.110.88.4 to let me know if the dns IP is reacheable. cos I can not even ping the IP address of the linux box from my network but it can ping itself. moreso, it can not ping another machine and other machine too can not ping it, so what could be the problem cos I just resinstalled the linux box now?

The /etc/resolv.conf is locally signifcant, but useful if you need to make name lookups on the DNS server itself.

First thing you need to do is start BIND. Anyone on the list who knows the location of BIND 9's binary on Redhat? I only know SuSE. Zeim, you spoke of a "service" command under Redhat once. Is there one to start BIND?

hi mark,

when I type ps -ax | grep bind is reply 2327 pts/4   s  0:00 grep bind

what of if I change my named.conf to the below stuff?

zone "." {
        type hint;
        file "named.root";
};
zone "localhost" {
        type master;
        file "localhost";
};
zone "0.0.127.in-addr.arpa" {
        type master;
        file "127.0.0";
};

will it be of help?

the ip of the machine to be configured as DNS srver is 64.110.88.4 and the gateway is 64.110.88.1 and the dns IP is 64.110.88.4 which is a /28 out of my /25 block of IP address. butwhen I type the host name the system during installation took the pry dns to be 64.110.88.1 which is to be the gateway, hope this won't cause me any problem during configuration?

Do I need to do any changes in the resovle.conf file?

thanks.

Paul, you then have BIND 9 installed.

I personally have very little experience with BIND 9. All  my BIND work is with BIND 8. The last time I fiddled with BIND 9, it only wanted to run as root, and not the user named; but that's a long time ago.

You need to find a way to start the BIND process. But first, see if it is running. I am not sure what process name it runs under on Redhat, but you could try one of these commands:

ps -ax | grep named, or ps -ax | grep bind

If nothing comes up, try to start it. Locate the BIND binary using the whereis command. You may be looking for a file called named, or bind, or something like that. You could also load the manpages to read about the file distribution of BIND 9 on your system. Once you locate the file, and start the BIND process, you should be able to start resolving Internet addresses, as long as your /etc/named.conf file is intact.

hello mark,

am sorry is a redhat linux ver. 7.2

when I used rpm -q bind8 it reply not installed, when I used rpm -q bind9 it repl not installed, but when I used rpm -q bind it reply BIND-9.1.3-4
And when I checked the directory cd /etc/init.d I see ypbind and open it to see the content it reads
ypbind: starting the ypbind daemon
tbis is a daemon which runs on NIS/YP client and binds them to a NIS domain.
thanks

Use the RPM command to check whether you have bind installed:

rpm -q bind8, or rpm -q bind9, or just rpm -q bind

You can also check /etc/init.d/ to see if you have the BIND name server binary/daemon there.

When you say Linux 7.2, is that Redhat, or SuSE, or Mandrake e.t.c You may want to be more specific.

Hi mark,
Know I don't have firewall running of my system. and it is a linux system with version 7.2
I thought BIND comes automatically with linux 7.2 when you install linux or do I need to install BIND separately after I might have installed linux?
how can I know or confirm if BIND is running in the background of linux 7.2

this is copy my named.conf file

## named.conf configuration for bind
#
# Generated automatically for bindconf, alchmist et al.
control {
         inet 127.0.0.1 allow { localhost; } keys { rndckey; };
};

include "/etc/rndc.key";
options {
           directory "/var/named/";
};

zone "." {
            type hint
            file "named.ca";
};

zone "0.0.127.in-addr.arpa" {
         type master
         file "0.0.127.in-addr.arpa.zone";
};

zone "localhost" {
         type master;
         file "localhost.zone";
};

And what of my resolve.conf how is it suppose to look like?

thanks so much for your assistant, I appreciate.

Hi Paul.

Do you have a firewall running on your system? What system is this? What DNS software are you running [BIND I hope], and what version. Is BIND running in the background? Do you have a firewall, I ask again?

Please paste a copy of your named.conf file. First, we get the DNS working, then look at Apache.
