Ubuntu does not normally use su, but sudo. Try running commands that need
to be root with "sudo" at the beginning instead.
If you absolutely have to have a root shell, then run "sudo su -", but be
aware that this is more dangerous than using an Administrator account on a
Windows PC, it's very easy to shoot yourself in the foot.
