First of all, make a copy of the backup file before attempting any 
operation.  I suggest trying gzrt 
(http://www.urbanophile.com/arenn/hacking/gzrt/gzrt.html).  I have 
not tested it.  The output you will get for the weekly file is 
another gzip compressed file.  Try what Stephane Bortzmeyer suggested 
on that file.

I'll also suggest not compressing a file which has already been compressed.
