RE: IP OVER ATM

Well, I can say I have no experience with ATM, but I know it's a very
scalable transport technology.

ATM [Asynchronous Transfer Mode] is a cell-based dedicated switching
technology. The cells are 53 bytes long, with 5 bytes for header
information, and 48 bytes for the payload. Each cell is asynchronously
processed, relative to other related cells and is queued before being muxed
over the transmission medium.

Since ATM is more hardware than software driven, it can provide faster
switching and processing speeds. Bit rates can be either 155Mbps or 622Mbps.
Speeds on ATM can reach as high as 10Gbps. ATM is truly a broadband service.

And because ATM is cell-based, you can run VVD [Video, Voice, Data] all at
the same time, without seeing any degradation in service levels, jitter or
signal breaks. It's a very fast, very efficient and very scalable layer 2
protocol.

My advice, read some more about it, and take it on. It will be good
experience for you as well as provide good service for your company.

Subject: IP OVER ATM

Hi Guys,
My company is planning to deploy IP OVER ATM but am not very comfortable
about it.Well if any one has experience with ATM I would be grateful for any
advice with regards to scalability and future prospects of the technology.
Regards!
