 Yes Argus puts the ethernet interface in promiscuous mode I was using it
to monitor network traffic and to see bandwidth usage  for that matter
that is what I was using ntop for although I know the risks associated
with interfaces in promiscuous mode I am banking on security through
obscurity since few people are likely to know.

thanks a lot for your help I will talk to Charles about their
implementation though it implies some down time for us.
Otherwise this has been a very interesting and educative discussion .
By the way I haven't been using linux for long I  haven't even spent a
year on it.
And to properly introduce myself I am 19 years old heading to University
to do my undergraduate degree.
Thanks all for your help please send me more whenever you come across
something that could resolve my problem.
