Hello Mohammed - Are you still having problems with this? There are many,
many reasons why you might see this behavior. As suggested already you
_might_ need to manually enter DNS addresses in the Network Control Panel
under the TCP/IP settings using Windows 98. Or, you might need to remove
DNS settings if they are incorrect. Most ISP's should hand your Windows
client all the information they need, but in some cases this is not true.
Also, check the Gateway tab under the TCP/IP properties in the Network
Control panel. If there is a gateway listed (this could be true if your
ethernet connection requires one for some reason), then this can break your
dialup connection. There's no easy fix to this if you need it for the
ethernet connection.
Note that you normally enter in different DNS information for dialup
connection in the properties of the dialup connection document and _not_ in
your TCP/IP properties under the Network Control Panel. To do this go to
the Dial Up Networking folder under the My Computer icon and then right
click on the dial up connection document you are using. Choose properties,
click on the Server Types tab, then the "TCP/IP Settings..." button. This
is where you should enter in additional DNS information if necessary.
Also, a few more tricks, in the properties section you can uncheck the
NetBEUI and IPX/SPX Compatible checkboxes under "Allowed network protocols"
- In the same box, you can uncheck the "Logon to network" checkbox to speed
up your connection and possibly resolve timing problems. If any of this
makes things worse, then be sure to remember your settings and put them
back as they were.
If you are accessing NetBEUI or IPX/SPX (i.e. NT Server on the remove
network and/or Novell fileservers) then you don't uncheck either of these
boxes in the "Allowed network protocols" section. Most likely you are not
doing this and you can safely uncheck them.
If you play around with all of this, then check to be sure that there is
only *one* Dial Up Networking entry in your Network Control Panel. If you
see multiple TCP/IP entries linked to your Dial Up Adapter you should
remove the extra ones until you only have one. If there are more than one,
then Windows does not know how to route traffic to the correct adapter entry.
And, if in the end, all this fails, then in very typical Windows fashion
you should remove all your Dial Up networking components and re-install
them in case you have corruption in any of the files. I can give you tips
on this if necessary.
